SPROUD MAKES A SPLASH ACROSS CANADA AS A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO MILK ALTERNATIVES

Innovative plant-based milk substitute brings pea protein into the spotlight

TORONTO – Swedish-born Sproud, a plant-based milk alternative, is attracting Canadians with its innovative use of an entirely new protein base for milk substitutes: peas. As the world’s leading producer of peas, Canada is no stranger to pea protein, yet this humble legume is seeing a surge of attention due to its numerous health benefits. Recognizing the rising demand for healthy, great-tasting and sustainable products, Sproud has created a suite of nutritious beverages for consumers to explore. Its four distinct varieties, Original, Unsweetened, Chocolate and Barista, are all made from the remarkable pea, which uses less water than traditional dairy or almond milk and has an impressive shelf life, able to maintain product integrity for 365 days.

Sproud is nut, soy, gluten and dairy free and is also non-GMO. In addition to boasting taste, consistency and nutritional value that mimics traditional dairy, Sproud’s products also contain five times the protein of almond milk and three times the protein of oat milk. These attributes make it an attractive alternative not only to dairy but to other dairy alternatives as well.

“Sproud is all about bringing people together around a shared passion for plant-based alternatives and sustainability,” says Maria Tegman, Founder and CEO of Sproud. “Our goal is to create an authentic connection with Canadians who value transparency and authenticity by providing quality products that not only taste incredible but do better for the environment.”

Sproud is at the forefront of sustainability and carbon footprint reduction. All products come in eco-friendly packaging and do not require refrigeration during the journey from production to store shelves. This intentionally cuts Sproud’s carbon footprint down by a third in comparison to the typical refrigeration required for other milk products and significantly reduces unnecessary waste. While Sproud was designed in Sweden, North American production has been localized within Canada by a Canadian co-packer based in Toronto. Sproud already sources many of its propriety ingredients from Canadian suppliers and has being actively working with its main pea protein supplier to achieve the particular specifications required to produce Sproud milk using Canadian-grown peas at a new facility in Canada. These efforts are expected to lead to production that is 100 per cent Canadian in 2021 for Sproud products that are distributed in Canadian markets. Sproud’s focus on locally sourced ingredients and local production speak further to the brand’s dedication to integrating sustainability into every aspect of its operations.

As the leading alternative to the alternatives, Sproud is also pleased to share that it is now the first plant-based milk in the world to receive Sugarwise Certification. Sugarwise is the only international certification body for sugar related claims and is recognized as a trusted authority whose marque guarantees that any sugar related claims have been independently verified in alignment with World Health Organization guidelines. This sought-after industry accreditation has been granted for all of Sproud’s product offerings, further demonstrating the brand’s commitment to transparency and to prioritizing nutrition across its entire product portfolio.

Sproud is currently available online and in store at national and independent retailers across Canada. For more information about Sproud, visit www.besproud.com.
