Giant Tiger store in downtown Winnipeg set to close in November

A Giant Tiger store considered a longtime staple in downtown Winnipeg at Donald Street and Ellice Avenue is closing this coming November.

A reason for the closure was not provided but many suspect rampant theft as the problem.

Giant Tiger Stores Limited is a privately held, Canadian-owned company. It operates under a franchise model where individual stores are locally owned and operated by independent franchise partners or partners connected to their communities, rather than being entirely owned by a single corporate entity.

Giant Tiger serves more than 260 communities across the country. The North West Company operated Giant Tiger franchise stores in Western Canada for many years under a master franchise agreement. In 2020, The North West Company sold the majority of its Giant Tiger locations back to Giant Tiger Stores Limited, retaining only a small number of stores.
