Food Stash Foundation, and local, online community grocer SPUD.ca are supporting those most vulnerable in our community with some cheeky, surplus food products. Using imperfect fruit full of goodness, Vancouverites can make Rescued Apple Pie and Rescued Smoothie with all the revenue (that’s right, all of it!) going to Food Stash Foundation to support the work they do to fight food insecurity and raise awareness around food waste in Vancouver, BC.
Food Stash and SPUD created the DIY Rescued Banana Smoothie Recipe and the DIY Rescued Apple Pie, to help you to fight food waste from your own home. All proceeds from the sale of imperfect fruit until Feb 15th purchased through SPUD in the Lower Mainland are being donated to the Food Stash Foundation.
“For us it is the most natural way to help our communities, through food. It’s the center of our universe,” says Helena McShane, Sustainability Manager at SPUD.ca.
Carla Pellegrini, Director of Food Stash, says “these fruits and veggies may look a little funny, but they still taste amazing and don’t belong in the compost bin! We’re so thankful for SPUD’s support of our work to redirect 70,000 pounds of good, surplus food to 32 organizations, 100 food insecure households with our Rescued Food Boxes and dozens of community members each week at our Rescued Food Market.”
Just last week, a senior shopper told Food Stash staff that this was the first year she could turn on her heat thanks to the money she is able to save by shopping at the Rescued Food Market. No one should have to wonder when they’ll get their next meal or if it will be adequate and nutritious. Food Stash is helping to break down barriers to accessing good food so the folks can focus on meeting their other basic needs like a warm home.
