IGA and Fresh St. Market partners with Girl Guides of Canada

BC’s IGA AND FRESH ST. MARKET PARTNERS WITH GIRL GUIDES OF CANADA
12,000 boxes of Girl Guide Cookies will be available in IGA and Fresh St. Market across BC starting today, April 1

Vancouver, BCApril 1, 2020 – IGA and Fresh St. Market are joining forces to extend a helping hand to Girl Guides of Canada, upon learning about the challenges the organization faced with thousands of unsold cookies. Beginning today, Girl Guide cookies will be available at all IGA and Fresh St. Market locations across British Columbia. All proceeds will benefit Girl Guides of Canada’s ongoing programs.

“Since 1927, Girl Guides have been going door-to-door selling cookies to support our programs,” said Diamond Isinger, provincial commissioner for BC, Girl Guides of Canada. “With physical distancing, we know this is not an option at this time and we need to get creative. We are grateful to community-minded organizations like IGA and Fresh St. Market, who have come forward to offer significant logistical support to get our cookies into the homes of British Columbians, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

Like many organizations, Girl Guides of Canada has had to find alternative ways to meet fundraising goals essential to the organization. IGA and Fresh St. Market are now working together with Girl Guides of Canada to retrieve the thousands of boxes of cookies, and in the safest way possible, make these available to customers so they can enjoy the yummy cookies while supporting Girl Guides to continue offering their in-person educational and leadership programs for girls when pandemic protocols lift.

“It has always been our mandate to support the community and at times like this, it’s even more vital for businesses and non-profits to come and work together,” said Mark McCurdy, Vice President of Retail Operations. “Many British Columbians likely have had some form of connection to the Girl Guides organization and many have enjoyed Girl Guide cookies in the past, all the while supporting their diverse and important programs. We are pleased to be able to assist them in getting their cookies into the hands of customers who want to help.”

All sales of the cookies will go directly to Girl Guides of Canada; IGA and Fresh St. Market are simply providing a safe distribution network.

“Thousands of Girl Guides are at home, looking at their boxes of cookies and trying to determine how they can get them sold,” added Isinger. “It is such welcome news knowing now we have found businesses that are stepping up to help us find a solution.”

The Girl Guide cookies will be available at all IGA and Fresh St. Market locations across British Columbia starting today, April 1, 2020. For more information and for locations, please visit www.igastoresbc.com and www.freshstmarket.com.
