Herbaland’s 2023 Sustainability Update

Since the launch of their compostable packaging in April 2022, Herbaland has diverted over 9 tons of plastic from landfills

VANCOUVER, BC – April 5, 2023 – In April 2022, Vancouver-based company Herbaland swapped their plastic bottles for pouches made from 100% compostable materials. By making this switch, they have been able to divert over 9 tons of plastic from landfills.

In the last year, Herbaland’s innovative packaging has helped them win sustainability awards such as the SEAL Environmental Initiative Award. The SEAL Awards honor companies that

show leadership, innovation and commitment to sustainable business practices. Herbaland was also certified as a B Corporation in October 2022, joining over 6,000 companies across the world committed to using business as a force for good.

“We’ve seen firsthand the effects that climate change has had on our planet after our own province of British Columbia, Canada, experienced numerous floods and wildfires destroying the environment and our homes. With sustainability at the core of our products and business, switching to compostable packaging pushed us to increase our efforts to help protect our planet” said Herbaland Co-Founder and CEO Aisha Yang. “We want to be a disruptor and changemaker in an industry that creates so much waste.”

In the supplement and vitamin industry, plastic bottles are the standard packaging. Over 1.8 million bottles are sold each year in the US alone, and many of these are packaged in other secondary packaging. With sustainability as one of Herbaland’s core values, they are striving to be a part of the solution to this issue while inspiring other companies to do the same. In 2022, Herbaland initiated a partnership with veritree to plant one tree for every pouch they sell, with a goal of planting 2.5 million trees by 2025. By the end of April 2023, Herbaland will have achieved their goal of planting 500,000 trees in their first year of partnership with veritiree.

Herbaland’s compostable pouches are made from sustainably sourced plant-based ingredients including wood pulp, cornstarch, cassava, sugarcane, and beets. All of the components of their pouches, including the zipper, conform to the OK compost HOME certification and will fully break down into organic materials rather than microplastics. This packaging has also been approved by Pela’s Lomi Approved label, which approves compostable plastics for use in the Lomi compost machine.
