Albert Lum

“Well it’s Official! This time it is for real… Albert Lum is retiring”

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

After nearly 50 years in the grocery business, it is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement. My last day with Buy-Low Foods will be July 1st, 2020.

As I look back, I remember starting my career in this industry at under 10 years of age, in Fiji, where I worked at my family’s restaurant and grocery store. Our family immigrated to Canada in the early 70’s and I worked after school and on weekends at the IGA store in Fort Langley. I subsequently went to BCIT (where I met my wife Donna) and then continued to work at several IGA locations – eventually becoming store manager. My career with Buy-Low started in 1996 and evolved through several managerial positions to my current role as VP Supply Chain and Procurement. It has been a wonderfully inspiring and rewarding career.

However, time moves along and Donna too retired at the end of May….so we are both excited to embark on new adventures. The opportunities before us include more soccer and salmon fishing for me and more cycling, golfing, hiking, and traveling with Donna. As well, we are both keen to spend more time with our children as they start their own families…. Janna with her husband Dan and Kevin and his fiancé Stephanie.

This has not been an easy decision to make, as I will surely miss the people, I have had the pleasure to work with – many of whom have become dear friends. And it is my sincere wish that these relationships will continue to keep us connected.

The opportunities afforded to me and my family through Buy-Low will always be remembered and greatly appreciated. I genuinely wish the very best for you and your families through the balance of your careers and through these challenging times as well.

Yours truly,
