Piller’s new meat snacks address consumer demand for shelf-stable, convenient, protein-rich snacks

pillers-salami-whips-200wWaterloo, ON, Tuesday, May 9, 2017 – Piller’s Fine Foods has launched Salami Whips in response to growing consumer demand for shelf-stable meat snacks.

Crafted according to authentic European recipes, Piller’s Salami Whips™ are semi-dry cured, naturally wood-smoked meat sticks available in 100-gram re-sealable and 15-gram single-serve packages, making them a perfect solution for lunchboxes, light meals, and snacking on-the-go.

They are available in three flavours: Mild (traditional German salami with notes of black pepper and exotic spices), Spicy (traditional Central European salami with robust onion, garlic and habanero notes), and Kabanosy (traditional Polish salami with garlic and paprika). The slender “buggy whip” shape is widely available in Europe, but this is the first whip-shaped product available in Canada’s leading grocery stores. And, when placed on a charcuterie tray, the product’s distinct artisanal look is a crowd-pleaser.

Piller’s Salami Whips have a tender bite, are rich in protein and free of MSG and all major food allergens (gluten, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, mustard, sesame, egg, fish, soy, and sulphites).

“Authenticity continues to be a key trend in food, including snack foods,” says Stephanie Egan, Marketing Manager, Piller’s Fine Foods. “Consumers are interested in real food and a return to the values of craftsmanship and time-honoured traditions. According to Nielsen, meat is one of the top snack categories for sales growth in Canada, outpacing growth in chips and corn snacks, dry fruit, and nuts.”

“Much of the growth in meat snacks is being driven by Millennials,” Egan adds. “Snack foods are the most commonly found consumer packaged goods in millennials’ shopping baskets. With 59 per cent of their food occasions occurring as snacks, Millennials are significantly more likely to snack compared to older consumers.”

Consumers are also looking for ways to balance healthy, purposeful snacking with their desire for indulgent and emotionally satisfying snacks. Snacking between meals has increased dramatically in the last two years, and four out of 10 Canadian consumers now snack as a meal replacement.

Piller’s Salami Whips have won a 2017 Best New Product Award Voted by Canadian Consumers from BrandSpark Research and is a finalist for the Retail Council of Canada’s 2016 Canadian Grand Prix New Product Awards, to be announced May 31, 2017.

The average retail price for a 100-gram package is $4.99 and can be found at grocery stores including Loblaws, Zehrs, Sobeys, Freshco, Fortinos, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, and Foodland.

About Piller’s Fine Foods

Piller’s Fine Foods is one of Canada’s leading manufacturers of specialty European deli meats with more than 600 employees. Its corporate headquarters, production plant and distribution centre are located in Waterloo, Ontario, with operations in Brantford, and Arthur, ON.

Piller’s was founded in 1957 in Waterloo by Wilhelm Huber using family recipes, quality ingredients, and traditional European sausage-making methods. From those humble beginnings, Piller’s has become one of North America’s largest producers of European sausages and deli meats, famous for award-winning products such as Black Forest ham and air-dried salamis. To this day, Piller’s still uses the same natural aging, curing, and smoking process that had customers lining up outside Wilhelm Huber’s butcher shop more than 60 years ago. Piller’s Fine Foods is a division of Premium Brands Holdings Corporation (PBH). More information is available at www.pillers.com.
