New carbon-captured bar soap hits retail shelves at Calgary Co-op stores this month

The Cal & Gary’s “Friendly Soap for Friendly People” is made from carbon captured at the retailer’s head office on Macleod Trail

Starting January 16, 2022, Calgarians can find a unique bar soap at their local Calgary Co-op. The retailer’s private brand, Cal & Gary’s, will offer a carbon captured bar soap, produced with carbon captured at the retailer’s head office on Macleod Trail.

How is it made? Carbon dioxide emissions from heating appliances at Calgary Co-op Head Office are captured by our Carbon unit and converted into potassium carbonate or pearl ash, which is used to make Carbon Captured Soap. The carbon is not re-released with use. The estimated annual CO2 captured at Calgary Co-op Head Office for this initiative is equivalent to planting more than 300 trees.

Currently, Calgary Co-op is the only retailer repurposing captured carbon into a natural, biodegradable personal care product.

The locally made soap comes in recyclable packaging and is a natural, septic-safe biodegradable product, free from parabens, palm oil and containing only natural ingredients.

There are several scent varieties of the soap, including:

  • Spearmint
  • Vanilla Chai
  • Sweet and Spicy Lemongrass
  • Coffee Honey
  • Activated Charcoal
  • Shea Butter
