VANCOUVER, BC – May 22, 2019 – Vancouver-based companies, Happy Planet and Farafena have joined forces to bring ethically-sourced superfoods to consumers across Canada. In a new initiative led by Happy Planet aimed at supporting communities around the planet through ethical sourcing, Farafena’s sustainably-farmed Baobab and Moringa powder harvested by women smallholder farmers in Mali and Malawi are being blended into Happy Planet’s smoothies.
Farafena’s founder, Oumar Barou Togola says of the partnership: “Our community development missions and values addressing healthier and equitable food options to the world, align perfectly with Happy Planet’s vision for creating a happier planet through feel-good food and ethical sourcing. It was a natural partnership and we are excited to continue to expand the reach of our products through different channels.”
As the son of a midwife and bakery owner in Mali and a hydrologist father, Oumar learned from an early age the value of grassroots development. It was those lessons that inspired him to share the fruits of his country with the rest of the world through sustainable partnerships with women smallholder farmers. Through equitable and transparent relationships, Farafena provides women with the opportunity to empower themselves, gain financial independence and contribute to the prosperity of their communities.
In light of the new partnership, Happy Planet has launched, “The Happy Effect” promotion giving one consumer and guest a chance to win a trip for two to Mali, Africa, to experience the Baobab harvesting celebrations in January 2020. The Baobab harvest celebrations are a culmination of a year of hard work during which the female farmers celebrate the fruits of their labour. As one of the most nutrient-dense fruits in the world, Baobab is a prehistoric species that has adapted over time to survive the dry and arid African savannah. To this day, Baobab fruit is gathered by the female farmers in the traditional way using bamboo sticks and a knife; however, Farafena is working closely with the women to introduce new pruning techniques that will improve efficiency and promote longevity of the trees.
To enter “The Happy Effect” promotion and for a trip of a lifetime to Mali, look out for specially marked Happy Planet smoothies with red caps from now until October 31, 2019, sold across the country including Loblaws, Walmart, Sobeys, Safeway, Metro, Save On Foods, Wholefoods, Choices Markets, Goodness Me, Avril & Planet Organic.
