Nanaimo, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 – Country Grocer stores raised an incredible $15,620 to make the Dreams of Vancouver Island children come true through the sale of “Dream bouquets” and Island-grown Christmas trees, and donations at the till between November 15, 2015 and December 12, 2015. New this year were: a donation for each Duso’s pasta and sauce purchased and “Sizzlin’ Smokie BBQs” featuring products from Grimm’s Fine Foods, Island Bakery and a special appearance by Chef Michael. This is the fifth year that Country Grocer has partnered with Help Fill A Dream and, to date, a grand total of over $60,000 has been raised to make Dreams come true.
All funds raised by Country Grocer and its customers go directly to support children like six year old Tyler from Nanaimo. Tyler was diagnosed one year ago with a rare condition called Portal Vein Thrombosis and he and his family will travel to Chicago in late February 2016 for surgery to install an REX shunt. This surgery is not available in Canada.
“Even though the thought of a major surgery is scary for Tyler, he says he wants the ‘big’ surgery and was very happy and excited to find out he was a good candidate. As odd as it may seem, Tyler’s Dream is to have this surgery done as he knows that it means not continuously having to go back in for smaller surgeries for the rest of his life,” said Shawna Bartlett, Tyler’s mother.
“We believe that Dreams change lives and that happiness heals. Help Fill A Dream is a thrilled to be able to support Tyler and his family through our Quality of Life Program which provides funding for medical treatment which is unavailable in Canada,” said Help Fill a Dream Executive Director, Craig Smith. “We would like to thank Country Grocer, its employees, its customers and its suppliers who have generously supported the campaign again this year and helped to push the total raised to a new high.”
